| An important aspect of the program is sustainability, a core value in the design philosophy of BDG. When faced with the choice of either demolishing the current structure and constructing a new “DENOVO” branch, or pursuing a potentially complicated renovation utilizing the existing building, Regions chose to renovate. This decision conserved considerable energy and material resources. Energy is conserved by both reducing the amount of material taken to the landfill and the amount of new materials being shipped to the site. This effort significantly reduces the environmental footprint of the project, an ideal result that is indicative of both Regions and BDG’s commitment to sustainability.
The renovation of this project required a complete remodel of the interior and exterior of a long-empty, former bank building. Located within a design-restricted district, the city required a Mediterranean Revival façade be implemented in the renovation of the facility. Each step of the process also focused on improving the customer experience inside the new design with the goal of increasing branch revenues. This condition presented quite a challenge, both technically and economically, as the existing architectural vernacular consisted of nineteen seventies modernism. Through critical analysis, technical ingenuity, and design efficiency, BDG was able to deliver an attractive, functional, and affordable project.
